In the 1970s the US Air Force began a top secret program to develop a "stealth" aircraft that could go undetected by radar, penetrate enemy air defense system and attack high value targets. Have Blue was the code name for the Experimental Survivable Testbed (XST) program to build and fly the worlds first stealth aircraft. Built by Lockheed's "Skunk Works" Advanced Development Projects group and flown at the secret Groom Lake (Area 51) test site, the design proved that an aircraft's radar signature could be substantially reduced. Success of the Have Blue program lead to the design of the F-117A Nighthawk.
